FAQ

What kinds of problems can you help with?

Neill06.jpgMost emotional/psychological problems—anxiety, depression, grieving, trauma, historical trauma, marital discord, anger problems, addictions, low self-esteem, etc.— are almost always treatable with psychotherapy, especially if energy psychology methods are part of the process.

If you have a drinking or drug problem along with one of the above problems, a willingness on your part to deal with the whole picture will increase your probability of success. It works less well just to focus on the drinking problem or the emotional problem alone.

Can I get better without professional help?

Short answer: You often can.

  • Depression. If you are suffering severe depression for the first time, you will probably recover from it in one to three years. You may be able to reduce your suffering and recovery time by taking antidepressant medication. Unfortunately, recurrence of the depression at some point in the future is likely. With appropriate psychotherapy, however, you will likely recover in less time and you will be less likely to have a recurrence.
  • Anxiety. On the other hand, certain anxiety disorders, like intense fear of heights, flying, snakes or public speaking, are not likely to change without therapy. Fortunately, phobias usually respond quickly to modern energy psychology treatments.
  • Trauma is more complex. Most people who were traumatized earlier in life (child abuse, rape, deaths, combat, etc.), now cope with life at some level, without ever having sought professional help. Unfortunately, that level is often less than it might have been. The old trauma may comes back in the form of fatigue, sleep disturbance, chronic headaches, addictions, so-so relationships, disturbing thoughts, low self esteem, or just a general malaise and unhappiness. Yet in spite of these symptoms, people go on to raise families and have successful careers. Appropriate psychotherapy can make a huge difference in their quality of life, whether at age thirty or age sixty.

On the subject of trauma, can you help without having to dig up all the gory details of the past?

Most treatments do involve revisiting the past traumatic events, and that can be too disturbing for some people. Today some new energy psychology approaches are emerging that may allow you to gain some of the benefits of trauma treatment without your actually having to talk much about the past.

What if I want to do better at my job or in my marriage, but don’t really have a ‘problem?’ I want more meaning in my life.

Great! This is a question about life coaching. At the root of all personal work, whether you call it healing or personal growth, your intention is to create more happiness in the present and a better future. If you are feeling unfulfilled or stuck, our job will be to find and deal with whatever is holding you back. I use energy psychology methods as primary tools in this work.

Let’s discuss what you need.

Can you help me and my partner rebuild our communication?

This is important, interrupted communication is at the root of many relationship failures. As we rebuild communication, what usually happens is your level of understanding and affection improve along with the communication.

Can you help me with food cravings and a weight problem?

I can help you reduce cravings with energy psychology. More specifically I can teach you how to do it with the help of an inexpensive CD I will ask you to buy. I used to be a chocolate addict, was introduced to the techniques on the CD, and now I enjoy chocolate without craving it.

However, reducing or eliminating cravings is only a piece of the puzzle for most people with a weight problem. We may need to go deeper to get lasting results.

Can you help me with my possible alcoholism?

If you have a drinking problem that you want to overcome, chances are there are other emotional/psychological problems present as well. In other words, your drinking may be self-medication for something else in your life. If you are willing to put everything on the table do whatever it takes your chances of success are good.

How practical is it to come and see you?

Sometimes you can gain clarity on an issue in one or two consultation sessions. Sometimes it takes a number of sessions to reach a breakthrough. Consider the following:

  • Is it practical to leave depression behind and to be able to enjoy the company of others again?
  • Is it practical to stop having panic attacks?
  • Is it practical to be able to have a conversation with your spouse again?
  • Is it practical to be able to respond to the kids rather than snap at them?
  • Is it practical to be able to speak in public for the first time in your life?
  • Is it practical to feel your life has meaning and purpose again?

I believe most of the time our work is eminently practical. Otherwise, I would be in some other occupation.

Ultimately, it is you who must decide on the practicality of personal change.
