Hello Dr. Neill,

In your book "Living with a Functioning Alcoholic", you mentioned that this type of alcoholic seeks approval from his parents even if he is a grown man. I was so surprised to read this as this was very, very true of my now deceased husband (who died of liver failure in 2007 due to his daily, excessive drinking). My deceased craved approval from his parents, especially from an uncaring, distance step-father, from whom he never got attention, respect or approval. His mother was caring and attentive, but unable to be affectionate as she was a victim of a miserable marriage, but that is another issue. My question for you is, "How did you know that this is a truism for a functioning alcoholic and why is this so?"
