In western culture multiple marriages to one person at a time have been the norm for centuries. It is only in the last 100 years or so that divorce has replaced death among all but the very old as the typical way for a marriage to end.

Again and again people have difficulty with a new relationship in which one of the parties has recently been in a relationship which ended…The ending may have come through the death of a partner or a separation.
