Psychology is about how people behave.

It's about how they think.

It's about how they interact with one another.

It's about how they achieve peace and joy.

It's about consciousness and conscience.

It's about healing and growth.

It's about attitudes.

It's about raising our children.

It’s about meditation.

It's about spirit and inspiration.

Psychology is about about overcoming the impossible.

The libraries and bookstores are full of books on every imaginable aspect of psychology. But do you have the time and inclination to wade through the jargon and psychobabble to extract the practical lessons?

Even if you went back to University and learned the language of psychology, are you sure you would be able to apply it to your life? (It took me years to make the leap from the academic to the practical.)

Helping people learn self-help psychology strategies has been my personal mission for years. But I'm getting frustrated.

I have a busy psychological counseling practice and I find I don't have enough time anymore to answer all your questions.

Think about for a moment. Don't you have questions about such things as improving your relationship, self insight, meditation, negative habits like worry, your urge to help everyone else and neglect yourself, recovery from loss, alcoholism or how to maintain balance in your life? Most normally healthy people have lots of questions like these.

So I Decided to Do Something about It.

A short story will give you a hint as to how I'm attempting to solve this problem:

A Personal Story

When I was in my 20s and was applying to various graduate schools, I told a professor, Dr. Peter Denny, that I was interested in studying educational psychology or some form of applied psychology. He quickly advised me against going into such a program. He challenged,

"If you want to do something worthwhile for people, study psychology and then learn how to take what you learned and translate it into language that people can understand. Most psychologists are notoriously bad at that."

Well, that idea sat dormant for many years, but here I am 40 years later doing exactly what he had suggested.

I share my thinking and self-help tips with you
by way of my writing.

I started to write a biweekly column for our local newspaper. That was in 2000. By popular demand I now write two columns, one for the Parksville-Qualicum News and another for Today's Woman, Nanaimo News Bulletin.

What Others Are Saying
A local psychologist wrote:

"Beautiful writing, Neill! You somehow manage to be personal, personable, and utterly professional, all at the same time. The whole community, lay and professional, will benefit from what you have to share. Thank you.

Just want to let you know how much I liked your writing in today's paper!"

Take care
Barbara Mallory, Ph.D.
One of my editors wrote:

“As always, you've penned another insightful, awesome column! It is truly a joy to read your work, Neill.

Thanks for doing such a great job. Your column is an asset to our paper."

Catherine Litt, Editor
Today's Woman, Nanaimo News Bulletin

People tell me my newspaper columns do help a lot of people.

Unfortunately, the practical, self-help ideas for the most part do not reach beyond our local community. And lately more people from afar have been making inquiries.

So my solution to the expanding demand has been a free eNewsletter:

Dr. Neill Neill's Practical Psychology

Each issue of Dr. Neill Neill's Practical Psychology features an original article on some topic of practical psychology. And I send it out by e-mail to you or anyone else who wants it.

The goal of my writing is to help people around the world to help themselves become more self-aware and live happier, healthier lives.

My Commitment to You

You can be sure when you receive my newsletter it's my best current thinking on the subject. And I do mean mine. My articles come out of a lifetime of experience in doing healing work with people and, perhaps more importantly, out of a lifetime of living.

What I attempt to do with every short article is to provide the essence of the subject at hand as I see it, and to leave you with something practical.

You may get a practical insight about something you do. You may begin to look at a subject in a different way. You may be able to apply immediately a self-help tip that I provide. You may take away some pointers on how to go about dealing with a situation you're facing. You may simply become more self reflective, and that is always practical.

A prominent businesswoman stopped me on the street the other day. She grinned and said "Your articles always make me think."

And that is my guarantee to you: My articles will make you think.
